Some works capture an image. Others capture a moment when an artist discovers an entirely new way of thinking. Awareness of Action (Осознанность Действия) belongs to the second category.
Lev Kropivnitsky was one of the important figures of the Soviet nonconformist movement and one of the key artists associated with the Lianozovo circle, an early center of Moscow’s unofficial art scene. The group brought together artists, poets, and intellectuals who were searching for forms of expression outside the strict language of Socialist Realism. Kropivnitsky was among the first artists of his generation to turn toward non-objective art at a time when abstraction itself was treated with deep suspicion by the Soviet cultural establishment. For him, abstraction was never simply a formal experiment. It became a way to express inner tension, memory, thought, and emotional experience that could not be described through recognizable imagery. After war, imprisonment, exile, and rehabilitation, Kropivnitsky returned to Moscow with a radically changed view of art. He later described painting itself as an act of cognition — a way of understanding reality through gesture, rhythm, and color rather than through direct representation. Art Investment
Awareness of Action comes from the very heart of this search.
The composition is built from restless movement: broad passages of blue, green, ochre, violet, and earth tones are crossed by dense white gestures, sudden red accents, and layered traces of previous actions. Forms appear, collide, disappear, and re-emerge. Nothing in the painting is fixed, yet the whole surface feels controlled by an internal rhythm. The title reinforces this tension between spontaneity and intention — between action itself and the consciousness behind it.
This period is particularly important in Kropivnitsky’s development. From the late 1950s into the early 1960s, he was deeply engaged with abstract expressionism and non-figurative painting; by the middle of the decade, this phase had largely given way to more figurative, heraldic, surreal, and metaphysical imagery. In other words, works from this early abstract period belong to a relatively concentrated and historically significant chapter of his career. Kozlov Collection
It is also the period that has produced some of the strongest results in his auction history. One of the artist’s three highest recorded sales is Logic Beyond Galaxies, created in 1963, which sold at Ford Art Auctions in the United States in 2019 for $75,000. Another work from the same series achieved $90,915 at Cannes Encheres in 2011. Kropivnitsky’s standing auction record, according to ARTinvestment, was established at MacDougall’s in London in 2007, when The Blessed Virgin with the Christ Child sold for $91,419 against an estimate of $30,843–41,124. The comparison is significant. Awareness of Action belongs to the same early-1960s phase in which Kropivnitsky developed the abstract language that collectors have repeatedly valued among his highest auction results. Its importance therefore lies not only in its visual power, but in its place within one of the most sought-after periods of the artist’s career.
More than six decades later, the painting still preserves the urgency of that moment — when abstraction was not simply a style, but an act of artistic independence. In Awareness of Action, gesture becomes thought, movement becomes structure, and painting itself becomes a declaration of freedom.
